Round table “Yugoslav People’s Army and challenges of military professionalism” held
Within the scientific and research project “Development of professional military organization in Serbia 1804 – 1990: Experiences and Lessons”, the Strategic Research Institute, in cooperation with the Department of Social Sciences at the Military Academy, organized a round table named “Yugoslav People’s Army and challenges of military professionalism”. The presenters’ focus was on the obeying of basic principles of military professionalism in the Yugoslav (People’s) Army, as a military formation built on the grounds of the Yugoslav People’s Liberation War.
Besides the members of the Strategic Research Institute and the Military Academy, the meeting was attended by the representatives of different academic and educational institutions in the country – the Institute for Political Studies, the Archives of Yugoslavia, the Institute for Contemporary History, University of Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy, the Institute for Recent History of Serbia, the Faculty of Law for Commerce and Judiciary from Novi Sad. Within three panels, twelve reports were presented in total, which pointed to the limiting factors of military professionalism unhindered development, as well as the modalities which had the aim to bring the army closer to professional demands.
The today’s activity was opened by the director of the Strategic Research Institute, Associate Professor Jovanka Šaranović, PhD, emphasizing the broader social significance of the scientific and research projects organized by the Institute, especially those organized by the Military History Department. At the end of her opening address, she thanked the personnel of the Department of Social Sciences at the Military Academy who were co-organizers of the round table, and she particularly expressed her gratitude to the meeting participants who represented different academic and educational institutions outside the defence system.
